Excerpt from FIC: "A Prehistory of Fandom"

Jan. 4th, 2014 | 09:22 am

PopMatters ran an excerpt from my book Fic: Why Fanfiction is Taking Over the World, which is out now. Many thanks to nautific and eurydice72 for their contributions to the book. And thanks to all my old lj friends and interlocutors--esp. those from near a decade ago, who helped with my first forays into the world of ficdom.

Repurposing old LJ account for fan fiction research

Jun. 29th, 2012 | 08:10 am

Have just resurrected this account because one of the more interesting experiments in narrative fiction I've seen in a while happened here--as Sherlock fic.

I used to use LJ for teaching, but all the ads got really annoying so I stopped. So, no lj when I taught the Twilight fandom as part of a theory course. But now, I'm stalking, I mean, respectfully researching, Sherlock authors.

ENGL 2070 Course Evaluations

Dec. 17th, 2008 | 11:40 am

Apparently I can no longer have truly anonymous comments on WebCT, so I would like you to comment here on the following topics: Post in the comments without logging in. Please comment on as many of these as you can!

What shows do you think were the most successful *in class* (not what was your favorite show)? What shows do you think should have more time or be cut? What shows do you think were ok to view just 1-2 episodes?

What show(s) do you think really didn't work, and why? (2070 "Survivor")

What exercises/assignments (either in-class or at home, but other than watching tv) were the most fruitful for you? What helped you learn the most? What was the most fun?

In the future, what do you feel the balance between "one-off" episodes and "whole arcs" should be (keep in mind the timing difficulties involved in watching many episodes)?

Do you feel that the difficulties involved in on-line viewing/itunes are worth the savings? (As opposed to buying DVD sets).

Do you think the course would benefit from more information about production/technical matters, using outside people where possible?

What aspects of discussion were the most interesting to you?

What were the least successful aspects of the course?

Anything else?

Bridget Jones

Apr. 13th, 2006 | 01:40 pm

BJ: v. Adorno

Who has had a greater global impact?

Who is more popular among women?

If Bridget Jones is degrading to women why has it been so hugely popular? Some have even called it validating or redemptive.

Why are actors/actress being judged as performers based on their willingnness to gain or lose large amounts of weight?

Do you know that most female graduates of Ivy League universities are planning lives as stay-at-home moms?

What are the ways in which "Mark Darcy" is *not* superior to Bridget Jones?

What parts of Elizabeth Bennet *are* present in Bridget Jones? (given that intelligence and social propriety don't seem to be among them. . .)
